Hebrew Course Descriptions

HEBR 101 Introductory Hebrew (9 weeks)

Reading, writing, and pronunciation of the Hebrew alphabet reinforced by oral and written exercises. A small vocabulary will be developed.

HEBR 201 Prayerbook Hebrew I (7 weeks)

Syllabification, vocal vs. silent sheva, accent marks, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, possessive endings for singular nouns. Vocabulary and readings from the Siddur, the Jewish prayerbook. Prerequisite: HEBR 101

HEBR 202 Prayerbook Hebrew II (7 weeks)

Participles, prepositions, construct state, prepositional suffixes, past tense, the definite direct object marker (DDOM). Vocabulary and readings from the Siddur. Prerequisite: HEBR 201

HEBR 203 Prayerbook Hebrew III (7 weeks)

Suffixes for the DDOM, demonstrative adjectives, the verbs “to be” and “to have”, possessive endings for plural nouns, future tense, the reversing vav, imperatives, infinitives. Continuation of Torah cantillation Prerequisite: HEBR 202

HEBR 203 Torah Cantillation (10 weeks)

Supervised guidance through a step-by-step book and compact disc package (both male and female voices) to prepare B’nai Mitzvah students for chanting Torah. Prerequisite: HEBR 203

HEBR 301 Biblical Hebrew I (7 weeks)

Gender and number of nouns and pronouns, prepositions, perfect tense, definite direct object marker, construct chains. Readings from the book of Ruth. Prerequisite: HEBR 203

HEBR 302 Biblical Hebrew II (7 weeks)

Imperfect tense, drop letter imperfects, sentences without verbs, adjectives, possessive endings for singular nouns, prepositional suffixes, the reversing vav. Readings from the book of Ruth. Prerequisite: HEBR 301

HEBR 303 Biblical Hebrew III (7 weeks)

Participles, imperatives, infinitives, hollow verbs, possessive endings for plural nouns, Piel verb pattern, verbal suffixes. Readings from the book of Ruth. Prerequisite: HEBR 302
